Blog Post 1: Catholic Depictions of Mary in Italy

A large part of the Catholic faith surrounds the adoration of Mary, and this honor and respect characterizes itself often in the form of art: sculptures and shrines of Mary can be found in several nooks and crannies of Italy, as well as in altarpieces and religious artworks in churches.

Because God himself deemed Mary worthy to carry His only son, the savior of the world, the Catholic religion sees it fit to deem her worthy of extreme reverence, as well. Just as God himself honored her, so too does the Catholic religion. Additionally, Mary sacrificed several aspects of herself when she agreed to carry the only son of God; therefore, Catholics honor her commitment and sacrifice with visual mementos of the mother of Christ.

The first image I chose is called “Madonna Con Bambino” (Mary with Baby), by Antoniazzo Romano. The portrait depicts Mary in a blue robe, symbolizing her divinity here on earth. She is seen holding her child, Jesus Christ, and her face rests with emotions of peace and wisdom. Gold leaf surrounds her, representing her being bathed in the light of God. Because of her expressions of divine perception and the colors of this painting that exude holiness, one can see her importance in the Catholic Church, and sense a feeling of devotion for the Virgin Mary. Therefore, we can depict this piece of art as a religious reflection surrounding the saintliness of Virgin Mary. Believers of the Catholic faith can use this artwork as a moment of reflection for the Virgin Mary and thankfulness to her and God for her duties here on Earth.

The second piece of art I chose was an example of the shrines of Mary here in Italy. This exact statue depicts a Mary with a halo, bowing slightly. Catholics who pass and visit this shrine can leave gifts and offerings to show their gratitude, adoration, and respect. When passing this statuette altar, Catholics can feel a sense of appreciativeness for her life and duties, and can use this time as a moment of religious reflection, as well.

It is in this respect and in these examples that religious reflection and adoration can be found in the works of art surrounding Mary in the Catholic faith – and by placing her likeness on portraits in the church and on several street corners, those of the Catholic faith have ample opportunity to do so.
